I don’t think it is hyperbole to consider how magical the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule is. Siddhartha Mukherjee recounts the discovery of DNA and so many other aspects of the biology of genetics in an utterly readable, enjoyable fashion. “The Gene” presents a thorough review of the scientific work that has led to our current understanding of genetics, processes which were completely unknown to us just over 150 years ago. As a physician who studied undergraduate genetics and biology before much of the material in this book was discovered, I thoroughly enjoyed catching up on the remarkable progress of our understanding of the human genome.
