Whitehead’s descriptions of the brutality of slavery are unsurprisingly wrenching, but I believe this is the first book I have read that has actually made me nauseous. His story of the underground railroad and the various ways the states approached runaway slaves was fascinating and I’m sure there was a deep allegorical message, but honestly much of it was lost on me. So, ironically in spite of the disturbing nature of the book, I think I’ll read it again in the future. The message is too important to not fully understand.
